Mrs Marie Saumarez
Marie joined the team at Evelyn Cambridge Surgical Training Centre, having retired from being a Day Surgery Theatre sister for the preceding twenty years. When Marie trained as a nurse, many years ago, her taste for adventure took her to sea, working as ships nurse on a large liner. Marie felt she was lucky enough to circle the globe three times - and get paid for it! Which she felt also gave her great experience that she then developed, on her return, by doing an Intensive Care Course at Guy’s hospital.
Cardio-Thoracic ITU, was challenging and exciting for Marie and she loved every minute of it. She also had the great good fortune to meet her husband, who was a young doctor working there. After children, and other jobs, including collecting hearts for the Cardiac surgeons to use the valves for open heart surgery, Marie took a different direction, and went to work in theatre.
Retirement has brought the unexpected opportunity to go in a fresh direction, being involved in the relatively new concept of using cadaveric specimens for surgical trainees. Marie feels she is still learning more with every course that happens at STC, and is enjoying the chance to be part of a new and forward looking approach to training surgeons to the highest standard.
